McKendrick

One of my old scifi characters.

Summer McKendrick is a kind ,trusting, ordinary girl with horrible parents who trick her into joining the space marines, she thinks it's her older brother that's joining so she's happy to go along and say goodbye to him.

She signs a contract thinking it's something on her brother's behalf, she's a bit of a ditz to start with,and once she's signed up she can't get out of it.

She ends up on the Battleship Drakkar, and has to go through another round of excruciating training,which she's hopeless at. Her training instructor is an elite soldier/pilot from a family of great military heroes,he has never seen anyone as clueless and useless as Summer McKendrick,he's very rough with her and yells at her a lot. Despite this he ends up falling in love with her, although she doesn't like him much to start with because of his rough treatment and all the yelling. As she gets to know him she starts to like him more.

Eventually she does manage to make a success of herself, but in more of a desk job than one that requires her to fight.
